Proper Nutrition is the Foundation for Healthy Life One of the easiest and fastest ways to increase your dog’s health is to feed him a better diet. The saying “You are what you eat” also stands true for our pets. I will also add, you get what you pay for. Have you ever wondered how a 40 lb bag of commercial dog food can cost $15-20. That is 37 to 50 cents a pound! The images that commercial pet food advertisement promulgates are a bit deceiving. Instead of whole chicken they can legally substitute it for chicken heads, feet, intestines and bowels. Prime beef chunks have been replaced by cow brains, tongue, esophagus, ears and other parts not fit for human consumption. Another iffy term which is present in most foods are meat or poultry by-products. A misnomer since they contain little meat or poultry, they are actually the parts left over after all the meat has been stripped from the bone (heads, feet, beaks, feathers, stomach, bones, blood, intestines and also substances such as abscesses and cancerous material). Glandular tissue may contain high levels of hormones, which may cause serious health problems including cancer. Unlike bacteria and viruses they are not destroyed by the high temperature or pressure-cooking. Cats seem to be most adversely affected by hormone levels. Other ingredients that most holistic vets consider detrimental to our pets health are grains. Most of the grains used are also not fit for human consumption and have not been tested for impurities such as mold or pesticides. Dogs and specially cats are CARNIVORES. Check the labels on what you are currently feeding your pets and you will notice that grains and by-product are the first 5 ingredients; therefore constitute more that 70-80% of the food. Most holistic vets are convinced that grains are the culprits for the epidemic of food allergies and OBESITY in the pet population. The canning and high temperature cooking to manufacture kibble to sterilize and destroy microbes also destroy the nutrients. This is also done to prolong shelf life. The cooking process will denaturalize most proteins and vitamins as well as the enzymes necessary for digestion. If you eat a raw apple, it contains the enzymes necessary for you to digest it, so your pancreas works less. If you cook it, the enzymes will be destroyed and your body has to work extra to synthesize those enzymes. Raw foods have a vital energy that cooked/processed foods lack. If you burry a cooked potato it will rot, if you burry a fresh potato you will get a plant! To compensate for what has been lost in the cooking process the manufactures add vitamins, minerals and amino acids. It has been systematically shown that these synthetic vitamins are not absorbed by the body as well as vitamins that are obtained through a natural diet. Vitamins are extremely complex organic substances needed in small amounts in the diet. Real vitamins are too complex to develop in a test tube and put in a bottle – even with modern technological advances. What man has developed is a “vitamin fraction” or a small part of a real vitamin and given a name such as ascorbic acid for vitamin C. REAL vitamins can only be obtained from FOODS containing whole nutritional complexes. The body can then choose the nutrients it needs for assimilation and excrete what it does not need. As if that was not enough, harmful chemical preservatives and other artificial additives like food coloring are intentionally added by the manufacturer while others come from herbicides, insecticides and pesticides used by farmers to boost crop yields. About 60% of all herbicides, 90% of all fungicides and 30% of all insecticides are considered to be cancer causing. Many pet foods advertised as preservative free, do in fact, contain preservatives, as manufacturers are not obliged by law to list the preservatives they did not add themselves! BHT and BHA are two well known CARGINOGENS used as preservatives in both animal and human food. If you now wonder how your pets eat this junk, food manufacturers have cleverly devised a way! spraying fat or digest on the kibble that acts as a binder for other flavor enhancers like salt and sugar (corn syrup). Just like us, cats and dogs are naturally attracted to sweet and salty foods. Open a bag of chips and M&M’s and see when you can stop! You can boost your pet’s health profoundly by changing his diet from unhealthy, commercial-brand to REAL FOOD! Switching your pet to a wholesome natural diet will help him stay healthy. He will be better able to cope with environmental stress caused by products that you need to give like drugs and topical insecticides and vaccines. Only fresh, raw, minimally processed foods can provide all the essential known and unknown micronutrients necessary for optimal health.
